5 Productivity Tips That Actually Work

Productivity advice is everywhere, but most of it is recycled common sense dressed up as insight. Here are five strategies that have real evidence behind them.

1. Time-block your calendar. Instead of a to-do list, assign specific time slots to tasks. This turns abstraction into commitment and reduces decision fatigue.

2. The two-minute rule. If a task takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. This prevents tiny tasks from accumulating into a overwhelming backlog.

3. Batch similar tasks. Context switching is cognitively expensive. Group phone calls, emails, and creative work into dedicated blocks.

4. Set a hard stop. Decide when your workday ends and stick to it. Parkinson Law states that work expands to fill the time available.

5. Review weekly. Spend 15 minutes every Friday reviewing what worked and what did not. Adjust your system accordingly.
